When Swatch launched its dive watch collaboration with it’s sister luxury brand, Blancpain, the reception was generally good but notably less compared to the response elicited by the MoonSwatch in collaboration with Omega. Likely partially due to affordability. The Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms collection is considerably pricier, priced at $500 CAD, compared to the $335 CAD MoonSwatch. Secondly, Blancpain lacks the brand recognition that undeniably Omega has. Lastly, the initial five-watch collection lacked a more subtle and “realistic” one-to-one recreation of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, similar to what was observed with the “Mission to the Moon” variant of the MoonSwatch. However, as the new year begins, Swatch has addressed this last concern with the introduction of a sixth Blancpain Scuba Fifty Fathoms oceans collection, arguably the one enthusiasts have been waiting for: the Ocean of Storms.

But wait, we know what you’re thinking… there’s only five (5) oceans in the world, why a “sixth ocean?” Well, it’s to celebrate Blancpain’s iconic Fifty Fathoms, a timepiece that transformed the watchmaking industry as the pioneer of true diver’s watches over seventy years ago.

Here’s a closer look at the new additions, the Ocean of Storms.

6th addition to the Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms Collection: Ocean of Storms

The Latin name being, “Oceanus Procellarum,” which is in fact, a lunar mare situated on the western side of the moon’s near side, rather than an actual ocean. Named “Ocean of Storms,” it holds the distinction of being the largest mare or “sea” on the moon, spanning over 2,500kms from north to south and covering approximately 2-million square kms. The newly introduced Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms Ocean of Storms, while not reaching the moon’s mare proportions, maintains identical dimensions and features as the other models:

  • Artic Ocean
  • Pacific Ocean
  • Indian Ocean
  • Atlantic Ocean
  • Antarctic Ocean

This non-limited edition model, “Ocean of Storms,” is available in a black hue inspired by the appearance of the new moon, also known as the Black Moon. Similar to the other five Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms, “Ocean of Storms” features a Swatch mechanical movement, “SISTEM51,” distinguished as the first and sole mechanically automated movement in production. Comprising only 51-components, including a central screw, this mechanism is resistant to magnetic interference, thanks to its “Nivachron” hairspring, and boasts a power reserve of 90-hours. SISTEM51 made waves in 2013 by revolutionizing the realm of automatic watches with its visible movement — the front displays the time, while the back unveils the narrative.

The “Ocean of Storms” has been associated with its exclusive nudibranch, scientifically named Okenia Luna. This distinctive creature is showcased in a digital print on the rotor of the movement, the component responsible for the watch’s automatic recharging through a mere wrist movement. Additionally, a detailed digital imprint of the full moon, focusing on the “Ocean of Storms,” is displayed on the oscillating weight.

Alike the other models of the collection, the Ocean of Storms is also water resistant in deep water, of up to 91-meters. Which is actually a nod to Blancpain, as the name “Fifty Fathoms” refers to the fathom – historically the maritime measure of depth in the English-speaking world – fifty fathoms equaling 91-meters (or 300-feet). Also made of Bioceramic, which is a unique material patented by Swatch. As an expression of their commitment to ocean preservation, the NATO straps used for the collection are made from recycled fishing nets.
